Encounter the Sacred: The Story Behind Mary MacKillop Spirituality Ministry
At Mary MacKillop Spirituality Ministry, our purpose is simple but profound. We exist to help people encounter the sacred at the heart of everyday life.
Spanning seven centres across four states, MMSM brings together a rich and diverse offering of spirituality programs, retreats and reflection days, heritage museums, conference facilities and private accommodation. Whether you are seeking stillness, community, formation or simply a place to pause, there is a space for you within our Ministry.
Who We Are and What We Do
Our centres serve groups and individuals seeking a place that nourishes the spirit. Each location offers its own unique character and setting, from the historic site in Adelaide where Mary MacKillop herself lived, worked and prayed, to the coastal serenity of Safety Bay in Western Australia, the waterfront grounds of the Central Coast in New South Wales, and centres in Melbourne, Baulkham Hills, Williamstown and Hobart.
Across all seven centres, we offer a complementary combination of experiences. Our spirituality programs, retreats and reflection days provide opportunities for deep personal and communal renewal. Our heritage museums preserve and share the remarkable story of Saint Mary MacKillop, Father Julian Tenison Woods and the pioneering Sisters of Saint Joseph. Our conference and meeting facilities provide unique, heritage-rich spaces for gatherings of all kinds. And our accommodation invites guests to rest, recharge and reconnect in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.
Rooted in a Remarkable Story
Everything we do flows from the legacy of two extraordinary people. Saint Mary MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1866 with a radical conviction: that every person, regardless of their circumstances, deserved access to education, care and the love of God. Mary spent her life going out to the margins, to remote communities, to the poor, to those society overlooked, and she did so with a courage, warmth and trust in God’s providence that continues to inspire us today.
That same spirit animates MMSM. We are not simply a heritage organisation preserving the past. We are a living, growing ministry seeking to meet the contemporary longing for spiritual encounter, connection and community in today’s Australia.
Our Ethos and Values
We believe the sacred is not something distant or reserved for a select few. It is woven into the fabric of everyday life and accessible to all. Our role is to create spaces and experiences that help people notice and encounter that sacred presence, wherever they are on their journey and whatever background they come from.
Welcoming hospitality, creative courage, intentional inclusivity and mutual respect are the values that shape how we operate across every centre and every interaction. We are a gathering place for everyone, from all walks of life, and we take that invitation seriously.
Looking Forward
As the spirituality needs of modern Australia continue to evolve, MMSM is committed to growing its reach and deepening its impact. We are investing in our people, enhancing our offerings and working toward a ministry that is sustainable, nationally recognised and genuinely responsive to the people it serves.
The story of Mary MacKillop is one of hope, resilience and a deep trust that God’s providence provides. We carry that story forward with gratitude and with confidence.
