This International Women’s Day, we celebrated a woman whose impact continues to be felt more than a century after her death. Saint Mary MacKillop remains one of Australia’s most beloved figures, and it is a privilege to see her legacy formally recognised once again.

A Life Dedicated to Others

Saint Mary MacKillop (1842–1909) has recently been recognised by North Sydney Council as one of the area’s Notable Women. This is a fitting tribute to a remarkable life lived in service to others. North Sydney held a special place in Mary’s story, and it is wonderful to see the local community honouring that connection.

Mary co-founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Through this, she dedicated her life to education and care for those most in need. She was driven by deep faith and an unwavering commitment to justice. As a result, she worked tirelessly to ensure that children in remote and disadvantaged communities had access to education. She helped establish schools and social welfare works across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond. Importantly, she achieved all of this at a time when such ambitions for a woman were truly extraordinary.

Strength in the Face of Opposition

Her path was not without difficulty. Mary faced significant opposition throughout her life. Nevertheless, she met every challenge with grace, perseverance and trust in God’s providence. It is this quiet strength, as much as her achievements, that continues to inspire so many people today.

Australia’s First Saint

In October 2010, the Church declared Mary a Saint. She therefore became Australia’s first canonised saint. Her final resting place is the Chapel at Mary MacKillop Place on William Street, North Sydney. Today, pilgrims and visitors from around the world come here to pray, reflect and draw inspiration from her life.

Carrying the Mission Forward

On this International Women’s Day, we give thanks for women who lead with courage, compassion and conviction. We are proud to carry forward the mission that Mary began, and furthermore, we are grateful that her contribution to North Sydney continues to receive the recognition it deserves.
